1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the video "Buddhism" because I'm very critical of the religion but I am also open-minded and would like to learn more about it. I wanted to learn more about their symbolism in art and its meaning and history. I chose the video "African Art: Legacy of Oppression" because I am interested in african art and their history. I wanted to see how their art has evolved from the time of slavery to today.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In "African Art: Legacy of Oppression" I learned why African art seems to be unnatural and would exaggerate a few parts of the body. They would glorify parts of the body in sculptures in order to symbolically insert parts of their believes and culture in the art. In the video "Buddhism" one of the key concepts that I learned was that Buddha was a real person. I learned that his real name was Gautama Buddha.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both of the videos relate to the readings in the text since they explain the concepts very clearly. Both, the reading and videos, taught me things that I did not know about the different cultures.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
Both of the videos added depth to my understand of both cultures and their history. I was able to understand and appreciate their art more than I used to in the past and understand some of the symbolism behind their art.
